Access for More

Both the DEC (Department of Environment and Conservation) and the Friends of the Cape to Cape Track aim to provide opportunities along the Cape to Cape Track for people with as wide a range of physical ability as possible. Some sections also cater for wheelchair access and for others of limited mobility such as the elderly, and parents with pushchairs.

Sections of the Track that currently accommodate wheelchairs / prams / frames etc. include:

  • Ellensbrook Homestead 1 km paved path & boardwalk to Meekadarabee Cave and Falls.  Toilet
  • Ellensbrook Beach 200 m paved path to coastal lookout.  No toilet
  • Redgate Beach Coastal lookout at main carpark.  Toilet
  • Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse to Sugarloaf Rock carpark: in progress - see notes below
  • Work is currently in-hand to seal a section of the Track between the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and Sugarloaf Rock Carpark.  This work will be progressed as funds become available - details of the progress made will be posted on this website.  All work done will meet DEC Standards for wheelchair access especially with regard to the width, the surface and the gradients involved.

Dec. 2007:  The first stage is now complete and was opened officially on Dec 4th.  The Access for More Track now runs from Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse down to Sandpatches car park, a distance of approximately 2.2 kms.  Sandpatches Car park is accessible from the Sugarloaf Road.  The turn off to the right is about 1/2km from Sugarloaf Rock.  The road in is gravelled and suitable for buses and 2 WD cars.

Sept. 2009:  A further section has been bituminized for approx. 500 m south of Sandpatches carpark, with the assistance of a grant from the South West Development Commission.  This section through to Sugarloaf carpark is still awaiting completion.  A further grant received from Lotterywest (August 2009), together with DEC matching funds, should see the completion of this section over the next 18 months.   Watch This Space!!

Persons wishing to walk with ‘lesser’ disabilities may contact DEC  for advice on what sections of the Track may suit their needs.
