What's New on the Track / Temporary Diversions

Please be advised a temporary diversion is now in place for walkers on the Cape to Cape track for approximately 1.5km north of Sugarloaf Rd.
Please refer to attached map.
The diversion is necessary for safety reasons as well as to enable faster rehabilitation of the previously used trail alignment, whilst a boardwalk is being built by DEC. This boardwalk will protect the significant local flora in the long term and also provide prime ocean views. It is also a significant final step in allowing for Universal Access from Lighthouse to Sugarloaf Rock.
Walkers are thus temporarily required to use Sugarloaf Rd and the Sandpatches track. The Cape to Cape track will remain unaffected south of Sugarloaf Rd and north of the Sandpatches carpark. The southern verge of Sugarloaf Rd is the safest for walkers as it is flatter and wider.
Detour signage and barriers are in place at either end of the closed section. Also, road signange is in place to slow vehicles down and make them aware of trail users on the road. However, wherever it is possible please remind people intending to use the trail here of the need to take extra caution on the roads as they will be sharing them with vehicles.
It is estimated that the boardwalk will be complete by October 2010, however the ability to work effectively at this site is weather dependant.
We aplogise for any inconvenience.
River Flowing Strongly at Mouth of the Margaret River 26/6/2010

Pleased be advised that the Margaret River has broken through the sand bar at its mouth and is now flowing strongly. Crossing the river anywhere near its mouth could pose a real danger of being swept out to sea. Walkers are strongly advised to take the diversion route along Caves Road rather than risk crossing. Phone DEC on 97316232 for further advice if required.

12/3/2009
Notice to Walkers using the Access for More Track between Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and Sugarloaf Rock:
Please be advised that the sealed Track ends just South of Sandpatches Car Park (approx 600 m from Sugarloaf) and that there is a new alignment for the section of the Track between that point and Sugarloaf Rock. This section is useable but is undergoing construction to Access for More standards. Walkers should use caution when on this section and follow the signs to Sugarloaf.
Enjoy your walk.

5/12/2008 New Alignment of Deepdene Beach Southern Exit
This beach exit has been moved about 500 m further north, due to erosion of the end section of beach during winter. The Track now leaves the beach just before the sandy point near the end of the final beach stretch, and about 200 m south of the 4WD track that comes down from the big corner on Hillview Road. There is a wooden sign and steps, then our normal track markers to indicate the way through the dune swale. The old track is joined again about 1 km to the south.

2007 New Section of Track Open for Everyone Including Wheelchair, Gopher and Pram Access. The section of the Track from Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse to Sandpatches Car Park (about 2km) is now sealed and wheelchair friendly. All gradients are gentle and boardwalks have been constructed over the sections with more difficult terrain. The section from Sandpatches Car Park to Sugarloaf Rock is still partilly unsealed and definitely not suitable for wheelchairs, gophers or prams - but watch this space; we are working on it!
